Channel OneAmerica honored with prestigious communications award from PRSA

Indianapolis (Oct. 22, 2008) – Continuing in its winning streak for “Channel OneAmerica,” the OneAmerica Corporate Communications department has received a Pinnacle Award and the chapter’s Best of Show honor from the Hoosier Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). OneAmerica received the honor in the Internal Communications Program category. The Best of Show Award is given to the entry with the highest overall score in the competition’s nine program categories.

Designed to enhance communication and engagement of the OneAmerica companies 1,600 employees, Channel OneAmerica is an internal digital signage system featuring 17 large-screen, flat-panel displays that are integrated within five separate OneAmerica locations. All sites are maintained on a LAN-based network in Indianapolis. The corporate communications department works with divisions of the OneAmerica companies to create, edit and deploy content to all locations from a personal computer. The system was engineered and installed by Indianapolis-based Sensory Technologies.

“We’re pleased that both the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and PRSA have recognized our achievements in communication as well as in meeting our business goals and objectives, which include energizing and engaging our workforce,” said Brian Lauber, vice president and chief marketing officer. “In an uncertain economic time for many organizations across the country, having Channel OneAmerica as an added vehicle to communicate our successes is very beneficial. Additionally, having a strong corporate communications team in place certainly makes all the difference.”

According to data from Sensory Technologies, there are only ten known companies in the Midwest region that leverage digital signage systems as part of their overall communications strategy. Of the ten organizations, OneAmerica is central Ind.’s largest corporate user. While other companies in the seven-county area have moved to include digital signage, OneAmerica’s unique messaging comes from many sources, such as a real time stock ticker, live Web updates, video, cable television and text messages.

Since the implementation of Channel OneAmerica in August 2007, the OneAmerica companies have seen an increased level of employee participation in company-sponsored events and activities.

“Without question, Channel OneAmerica played a major role in the success of last year’s Employee United Way Campaign,” said Jim Freeman, OneAmerica vice president of community affairs. “The stories, photos and messages we were able to run throughout the workday served as a gentle reminder to our people, and we experienced significant increases in employee participation and total dollars contributed – despite a waning economy and increases in local property taxes.”

The Hoosier PRSA Pinnacle Awards were judged by the Hampton Roads (Va.) PRSA chapter. Emma A. Inman, APR, director of corporate communications for Sentara Healthcare and Jessica Kraft, director of public relations for BCF served as judges for Channel OneAmerica. According to their comments, the research, planning, execution and evaluation for Channel OneAmerica led to a successful communications program.

“The research was excellent and laid the foundation for the development of solid goals and objectives,” Inman said. “Using multi-media to communicate a variety of content also was creative.”

“The use of multi-media, particularly for a more traditional company, was a great idea,” Kraft added. “Overall, Channel OneAmerica was well thought out and executed.”
